Wind Driven Ventilation

Windcatcher Passive Stack Ventilation The selection of the Monodraught Windcatcher Passive Stack Ventilation system will firstly depend on the intended use of the building and the volume of air to be removed. This dictates the number and size of Ventilation Stacks required according to CIBSE standards and guidelines to achieve the required rate of ventilation. Typical ventilation rates are:- Classrooms, 2-4 air changes per hour Offices, 4-6 air changes per hour Theatres, 6-10 air changes per hour Storage areas, 1-2 air changes per hour

The design of the Monodraught Windcatcher system will normally take into account the maximum volume of air to be moved during summer months, assuming a temperature differential between inside and outside of 5oC. Studies have shown that the external wind speed of 90% of the years duration ranges from 1 to 5m/s and these factors are used in the final design criteria of the Windcatcher systems.

Control Dampers

The control dampers in the base of the Monodraught system would be linked to a BMS system, or can be by manual control or be controlled by carbon dioxide humidity or temperature sensors. These would be linked to the motorised damper to control the rate of ventilation depending upon the time of year and weather conditions. Diffusers are used at ceiling level. The latest development from Monodraught is that the Windcatcher system can also incorporate the Monodraught ‘SunPipe’ Natural Daylight system which consists of a mirrored finished aluminium tube to reflect and magnify sunlight down into the room below. This provides the very best in natural lighting and natural ventilation.
